Saint Theognost, a Greek by origin, was appointed to the Russian Metropolitan see in 1328. He endured many labors to maintain the unity of the Russian Church and peace among the princes, making extensive travels throughout Russia. In 1342, he traveled to the Tatar horde, where he courageously defended the Church's freedom against heavy Tatar tributes in the presence of the Khan. He especially endeavored to spread Orthodoxy in Lithuania and to maintain ties of kinship and friendship between the grand princes of Moscow and Lithuania.
